IMMERSION SESSION ONE - Can we live on Mars?
Can humans survive somewhere else other than the Earth.
What do we need to survive?
Where can we go?
Task 1: Create a Mind Map, Question Web, List or use the Lotus diagram below ( digital copy) to brainstorm all the questions raised about humans colonising another planet such as Mars. Work in Pairs. Be open minded. Raise questions. Be positive or negative.

Task 2: 'Mars One', this was a proposed 'reality T.V. program that would send a crew of 4 to colonise Mars....this is a one way ticket! Thousands have applied, would You like to live on Mars?
Add to your Task 1 Brainstorm - Would you go, should we go, why, why not?
(This program has since gone bankrupt!)

Below are some other videos and websites about Mars which may be useful to raise ideas.
IMMERSION SESSION TWO - group rotations?
Students will Rotate through each task within their Groups. This requires that students buddy up into groups of 3-4 so that they can share a Terrarium.
Rotation 1 - Terrarium
Students work in groups of 3-4 to construct Terrarium as per instructions. Take Pics of the building process for your Science Journal. Your Terrarium will consist of 4 layers in order from the bottom
- Stones/Gravel/Pebbles
- Activated Charcoal
- Moss
- Potting Mix
NOTE - Leave 5+ cm from top of potting mix to top of container so plant has room to grow.
Insert 3 pea seeds around the wall of Terrarium at equal intervals.
Add 100-200ml of water evenly so seeds are wet but NOT SOAKED. Amount depends on size of container.
Seal tightly with glad wrap and rubber band for 2 weeks. DO NOT WATER in this time.
Rotation 2 - Biosphere 2 video
Students watch video on Biosphere 2 as a group
https://www.ted.com/talks/jane_poynter_life_in_biosphere_2
Stop at key points to discuss any questions such as
“ who would participate in such a program”
“ what would be priority in Biosphere to survive”
“ What animals/ plants would you include - top 5 of each”
“ skills of participants - medical, engineer,??
" why is this project useful/ important to our survival?"
Rotation 3 - Science Journal Prep ( CAT 2 Science)
Your Science CAT 2 this term is an ongoing journal of observations, experiments and recorded activities based on your terrarium.
The essential Question for the CAT 2 is,
" Can Life Survive in a BUBBLE?"
Students create a digital presentation for their Science Journal which will go over at least 6 weeks duration. Include in your presentation sections for a Basic Scientific Investigation; including
-Aim/ Introduction
- Hypothesis
- Method
- Results of Investigation ( photo Journal with annotations)
- Analysis of Results
- Links to Real Life ( Biological cycles/ plant stimuli/ structure/ processes)
- Conclusion/ reflection
Make your presentation PRESENTABLE - find images of Terrariums, plants, pea plants ( what you will grow ). There will be times when you need to insert slides as you make observations over the 6 weeks.
Possible Documents to use -
- Google Slides - 'Science Project layout'
- Google Docs
- Adobe Slate
- Adobe pages
IMMERSION SESSION THREE
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
" Can Life Survive in a BUBBLE?"
This session you are required kickstart your Journal. Sections that must have information are
Title page
Introduction to task ( may be written as an AIM
Hypothesis - what do you think will happen to your pea seeds if we seal the Terrarium on Day 1 and do not water it for weeks?
Method - In short steps describe how we constructed the Terrarium, the order of layers, why the pea seed was placed in a certain position, did you place the seed the right way around so the roots grow down into soil - can you tell??
